Here's what I love about saving PDF's in Google Docs. Whenever I get a new electronic gadget or appliance, I go to the manufacturers web site and snag a PDF copy of the manual, which I then upload to my Google Docs and drop in the Manual folder. Never have to worry about losing a manual anymore.

Can you fax that to us? That's so 1990's.

A few weeks ago I had to deal with my local town government. They wanted a copy of my survey. I scanned it in and asked the office manager what email I should send it to. A week later I still had not heard and called the official I had sent it to. His response, "I have an email address but I never look at it. I don't have a computer. It's best if you just send it to our fax machine" What year is this?

Dilbert.com

Where have all the Christmas Episodes gone?

Via Classic Television Showbiz

I have an idea for a cable station. Over the years every single TV series has done an annual Christmas special. Take the number of shows that have been on since the beginning of TV and multiply them by all the Christmases that have come and gone, then throw in the variety specials that were made and you have thousands of episodes. Let's have an ALL CHRISTMAS cable network.

Until then, you can find a lot of them on YouTube like this Bewitched Christmas episode from 1970

DirecTV on demand - they don't make it easy

I spent 3 hours of my life tonight trying to connect DirecTV to my wireless internet using a LinkSys WGA600N gaming adapter.  It's one of DirecTV's recommended ways to connect.  An entire night of complete frustration.

I have an AppleTV box.  It took 60 seconds to connect that to my wireless network, and I didn't need to spend $60 on a wireless adapter, because wireless was built into the box.

My head is still spinning from everything I tried but the bottom line... the Dynex wireless access point I was trying to connect to used WPA security.  I went into the access point and changed the security to WEP and it finally connected.  So if you get DirecTV to see your wireless network, but when you enter the security key and it keeps telling you it's invalid, even though you know you're entering it correctly,  you may want to switch your wireless router to WEP.

Or just buy an AppleTV and hack it with ATV Flash.

UFO or missile trace? Mystery spiral lights over Norway

The Russians are denying it was a missile. Obama will be accepting his peace prize there... perhaps this is the star that marks the birth of a new Messiah? Some are suggesting he is going to make an announcement about the existence of extraterrestrial life and this is a sign from the ET's.

Sad! But not too shocking - TV Rules

I'm not surprised the number of PC views is not as high as the tech geek community thinks it is, but I'm shocked that so little is being time shifted via DVR.  No wonder the networks are not responsive to what we all perceive to be a major shift.  Maybe the shift is happening a lot slower than we all think.

via ReadWriteWeb by Frederic Lardinois on 3/27/09

tv_logo_sinister.pngEven though online video is clearly making its mark in the media landscape, TV is still the predominant means of media consumption for the average American. Indeed, according to a new study sponsored by Nielsen, even among young adults 18-24, Internet video only represents less than 1% of their total media consumption. In total, the average American adult spends about 8 1/2 hours a day in front of a TV, computer, or mobile phone screen. On average, these adults also watched about 72 minutes of TV ads per day.

Google Goggles - Yet another reason I want a Droid.

This is long overdue. Early termination fees border on criminal

Cell phone companies started them and now satellite and cable companies use them as well. I think I'm committed to 6 years with DirecTV for the privilege of only paying $99 each to upgrade DVR's in my house.

via Techdirt by Mike Masnick on 12/3/09

Some Senators have introduced a bill that would limit early termination fees from mobile operators, saying they couldn't charge more than the subsidy they provided for the phone itself, and that the rules for any early termination fee needed to be quite clear. Not surprisingly, the mobile operators and their lobbyists are saying this is "unnecessary" because (due mainly to gov't pressure, not competition, as they claim) the operators have already made the ETF process less ridiculous by going with pro-rated fees based on how long is left on a contract. Of course, if it's true that the law is unnecessary, then it's not clear why they're against it...

You can find some great audio at http://radioarchive.cc/.  I'm currently listening to my favorite fictional detective Sherlock Holmes in a dramatization of the book, "Sherlock Holmes vs Dracula". (Download them here) Here's the information provided by the contributor -
Sherlock Holmes v Dracula by Loren D. Estleman.
Adapted for radio and directed by Glyn Dearman.
The year is 1890. A ship is discovered adrift off the English coast, its crew missing, its murdered captain lashed to the wheel, and its only passanger is a sinister black dog. This impenetrable mystery is clearly a case for the inimitable Sherlock Holmes, but for the first time in his illustrious career the great detective is baffled. Clearly the crew have been murdered and dumped overboard, but what can account for the captain's expression of imponderable terror and his acute loss of blood, or the ship's strange cargo - fifty boxes of earth?
The game is afoot, and Sherlock Holmes, aided as ever by the faithful Dr. Watson, finds himself on the trail of no mortal enemy, but the arch-vampire himself - Count Dracula...
Sherlock Holmes...........John Moffatt
Doctor John Watson......Timothy West
Count Dracula..............David March
Professor Van Helsing.....Aubrey Woods
Thomas Parker..........Michael Maloney
Mr. Caffyn................Noel Howlett
Mary Watson........Theresa Streatfeild
Vampire.................Frances Jeater
Inspector Lestrade...Nicholas Courtney
Mrs. Barton.............Katherine Parr
Red Bridger................John Hollis
First broadcast by BBC Radio 4 on December 19th, 1981. This re-broadcast November 4th 2007.
Long thought lost to the BBC archive, this marks the first time this play has been broadcast in many years. Because the BBC didn't keep a copy of this, it's been recovered from tape and such there is a little hiss in places, but the sound quality is very good.
My recording from BBC7 at 128kbps ABR joint-stereo LAME mp3.
A ninety-minute drama, split into two parts to fit on CD.
Enjoy and please seed.
